The Supreme Court heard the long-awaited oral argument Monday in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. City of New York. The case involves a former City ordinance allowing residents to only transport their home firearm to one of a few pre-approved fitting ranges, and nowhere else, such as a firing range outside the City or Second home.
The argument focused mostly on whether the case was still viable, given that the City repealed the challenged ordinance, and the State passed a law which prohibited the City from every reinstating it. Though the case is the first major Second Amendment case in nine years, and some of the Justices clearly believed that the Court should address the Second Amendment issues, it is unknown whether the Court will do so or whether (as other Justices urged) they will declare it moot.
A decision is expected in late-June. See scotusblog.com’s argument recap.
